A Vice President puts the economy under the moral life

    J. D. Vance, Vice President of the United States, writing in Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith

The clip circulating with this passage goes further than the passage does. In the version being shared, the Vice President is said to have called the economy a tool that can be used to encourage church attendance on Sunday. Those words are not in the book, and no transcript has been found that contains them. What the book does say is this:

“The economy is a means—an important one—to enable people to live good lives. The point at which we see the economy as the end in itself is the point at which we dehumanize ourselves.”

    J. D. Vance, Communion, 2026

In the same book he faults his own party for being "far too willing to worship the market", and says that keeping politics and religion apart is what "makes the Church irrelevant".

Taken alone, that is a moral argument, and an old one. Christians have said for two thousand years that a man is worth more than his wages. Nothing in it asks for a statute.

The reason it is written down here is the direction of travel, not the sentence.

Once the economy is publicly redefined as an instrument for producing a particular kind of life, the next question is unavoidable: which life, and who decides. In a republic the answer to that second question is the legislature. Every proposal on this site arrives by that road, and it always arrives sounding like care rather than compulsion.

And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

    Revelation 13:17, KJV

The prophecy does not describe a law against worship. It describes a law that reaches a man through his ability to trade. That is why an argument about the purpose of an economy belongs on a page about the freedom of conscience, long before any bill is written.

What must be said plainly: no Sunday statute has been proposed by this administration or any other. The Vice President has not called for one, and reading one into a sentence about human dignity would be dishonest. The record is kept because directions can be seen before destinations.

Quoting a man is not accusing him.

Nothing here charges any person with knowing what he is building. Most of what is collected on this page was said in good conscience, for reasons that sound like kindness: rest for families, relief for workers, a quieter day for everyone. That is precisely why it is worth writing down. The record is kept against the words, not against the men who spoke them.

Every entry links to its source. If one of them is wrong, quoted out of its setting, or has since been retracted, write and it will be corrected on this page in the open.
