Scripture says human history closes with a conflict over worship, brought on by legislation. When the state at last commands what God forbids, no one stays neutral. Every man shows, by what he keeps, whose authority he is under.

If you have never encountered this before, you do not need a system or a denomination to follow it. You need five texts, read in order, in an ordinary Bible.

One

A day that God claimed as His own

God did not recommend a day of rest. He appointed one, blessed it, and set it apart from the rest of the week. Then He put His own name on it. Scripture calls it the sabbath of the LORD thy God, which is a claim of ownership rather than a note of custom.

And He called it a sign

This is the sentence the whole conflict turns on. God did not call the day a preference, a custom, or a health measure. He called it a sign between Himself and His people, the mark by which they know whose they are. A sign is not a detail. A sign is how allegiance is shown.

A power that would think to change it

Daniel is shown a religious power that rises out of the ruins of the Roman world, speaks on God’s behalf, and attempts something no earthly authority has ever been given leave to attempt. Not to break the law of God. To amend it, and with it the sign that God set inside it.

A law that commands worship, enforced through trade

Revelation describes the close of human history as a crisis over worship, decided by legislation. It has happened twice already in the same book of Daniel: an image that all men were commanded to worship, and a decree that made prayer to God a crime for thirty days. Notice the penalty here. It is not the sword first. It is the market.

A people known by what they keep

Against that law stands a group defined by one sentence. Not by a denomination, not by a building, not by a name on a register. By what they keep, and by whom they trust.

God gave a day as the sign of who He is. A law that names another day is asking for the same thing.

People ask why a day should be the thing the world divides over. Because God chose a day to be the sign, and a sign is how allegiance is shown. Change the sign and you have changed whose you are.

Why God made a day the sign

He named the day Himself, and gave the reason: six days of making, then rest.
He called it a sign between Himself and His people, twice in Exodus and twice in Ezekiel.
It is the only commandment that identifies God by what He made.
A sign is worn where others can see it. This one is worn in time.
It asks for time, and time is the one thing a man cannot pretend to give.
It was written by the finger of God, in stone, among nine that nobody disputes.

Why a law can reach this one

The other nine live in the heart, where no parliament has ever reached.
No statute can measure whether you covet, or honour, or bear false witness.
This one is visible. It shows in whether your shop is open on a given morning.
A day can be scheduled, inspected, fined, and enforced by ordinary law.
Nearly everyone rests on some day, so a common day sounds like simple kindness.
And on the day a law names, every man’s allegiance is on public display.

The change is not a secret

Rome does not deny that the day was changed. It teaches it.

If the day is the sign, a change of the day is a change of the sign, and that change was never hidden. It is published, with paragraph numbers, on the Vatican’s own website. We are not revealing a secret. We are reading a catechism that anyone may open.

The Catechism says the day was replaced

“Sunday is expressly distinguished from the sabbath which it follows chronologically every week; for Christians its ceremonial observance replaces that of the sabbath” (2175). The summary at the close of the same article is shorter still: “The sabbath, which represented the completion of the first creation, has been replaced by Sunday which recalls the new creation inaugurated by the Resurrection of Christ” (2190).

And that the civil power should recognise it

“In respecting religious liberty and the common good of all, Christians should seek recognition of Sundays and the Church’s holy days as legal holidays” (2188). The paragraph before it is more direct: “In spite of economic constraints, public authorities should ensure citizens a time intended for rest and divine worship” (2187).

Stated again, as a duty toward legislation

“Therefore, also in the particular circumstances of our own time, Christians will naturally strive to ensure that civil legislation respects their duty to keep Sunday holy” (67). Earlier in the same letter, Leo XIII is recalled as having spoken of Sunday rest as a worker’s right which the State must guarantee (66).

Said more plainly by a cardinal

In 1905 James Cardinal Gibbons wrote: “you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify.” In fairness to him, he was not confessing anything. He was arguing that Scripture alone is an insufficient rule of faith, and Sunday was his example. We think his example proves rather more than he intended.

And this reading is not ours, nor is it new

The Westminster Confession of 1646, the founding document of English-speaking Presbyterianism, said of the Bishop of Rome that he “is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself, in the Church, against Christ and all that is called God.” Every Reformer held something close to it. American Presbyterians deleted the clause in 1789 and rewrote the section in 1903, and they say so themselves in their own published comparison of the texts. We did not invent this reading. We are declining to forget it.

Before you read a line further, here is what we will and will not do.

What we affirm

The conscience answers to God, and to no legislature.
Scripture is the only rule by which any doctrine may be tried, including ours.
Christians may vote, speak, serve and persuade in public life.
No government may command worship, not even a government we agree with.
God has faithful people in every communion, and He calls them His own.
A day of rest is a kindness. A commanded day of worship is a claim on your allegiance.

What we will not do

We set no dates and publish no timetables.
We name no living man as the beast, and no neighbour as an enemy.
We quote Rome only from Rome’s own documents, and quote enough to be fair.
We speak of a system and its claims, never of the sincerity of Catholics.
We cite only what a stranger can verify without trusting a word we say.
We would not ask the state to enforce our Sabbath either.

Where does Scripture say the seventh day was changed to the first?

Not where tradition says it. Not where a council says it. Not where a policy report says it. Where does the Bible say it? If God set the sign Himself, no other hand may move it. We went looking, and we publish what we found together with the strongest case against us.

2023

A federal mechanism was written down

The Heritage Foundation’s Mandate for Leadership carries a subsection headed “Sabbath Rest.” It opens by saying God ordained the day, then asks Congress to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act so that work on the Sabbath is paid at time and a half. The day defaults to Sunday.

2026

The same proposal, with God removed from the sentence

A Heritage report of 8 January 2026 contains a section headed “Support for a Uniform Day of Rest.” Now the reasons are family gatherings, outdoor activities and rest. Religious observance is still there. It has moved to fourth in a list.

2025

The author of that chapter took office

Jonathan Berry, who wrote the Department of Labor chapter containing the Sabbath Rest proposal, was confirmed Solicitor of Labor on 7 October 2025. The Solicitor is that department’s chief legal officer for the very statute the proposal would amend. We find no Sabbath action from him since.

2026

And the ground is being prepared

Pew Research found in April 2026 that 17 per cent of Americans want the federal government to declare Christianity the official religion of the United States, up from 13 per cent two years earlier. Among Republicans the figure is 27 per cent.

One more thing is true, and we will say it as plainly as the rest. No bill has been introduced. Not in Congress, not in any state legislature. Anyone telling you a Sunday law is about to pass has gone beyond the evidence, and a stranger will discover that in a single search. What exists is a mechanism, a precedent, a reason being refined in public, and a people being made ready to accept it.

That is not a reason to relax. It is the reason there is still time to decide.

1961

The constitutional door was opened long ago, and nobody has closed it.

It has been tried before, under law, on this continent. The Supreme Court settled the question in favour of Sunday laws sixty-five years ago, and that holding has never been overruled.

1888: A Sunday bill reached the United States Senate. Its closing section did not speak of commerce. It named the religious observance of the Sabbath day.; Never voted
1885: Arkansas repealed its exemption for seventh-day observers. Roughly twenty indictments followed. One man was fined a single dollar for hoeing his own garden, then charged $30.90 in costs.; Scoles v. State
1961: The Supreme Court conceded that Sunday closing laws had evolved from wholly religious sanctions, and upheld them as secular all the same.; Still good law
